100+ Funny Dog Names for Your Playful, Goofy, or Badass Pooch
If you can’t think of a good name for your dog we’re here for you. We’re going to explore 100+ funny dog names for your pooch, to help you decide on a new pet name, or give a proper name to a new dog in your life!
In the classic “Romeo & Juliette,” William Shakespeare wrote, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Your dog, however, probably doesn’t care too doggone much what name you give him as long as you call him sweetly.
However, if we needed science to tell us if our cats like their funny cat names and choose whether or not to respond to them, dogs are huge fans of their names and can’t wait to come when called, especially if you also involve walking or dog treats in the conversation.
Your dog likely thinks of you as a mom, dad, or the lady with the long dark fur on her head who gives food! Your faithful pal will respond to whatever you choose to call him, and the fun part is that we can come up with funny dog names, witty, silly, or completely wacky names for animals and our pets will love us all the same.

Conclusion
Dogs already make us smile, but it’s nice to find cute (and appropriate) dog names that bring out a pup’s unique personality. We use names to identify our dogs, to call them to us, and praise them, so always use the name chosen with a kind tone to your voice. Of course, dogs understand everything we say – even when we speak to them via pet cameras – but it is best to choose a dog name that he or she can easily learn. One or two syllables say the experts, but longer names will do just fine as long as you pronounce them clearly.
Additionally, consider a name that ends in “y” or has that “ee” sound at the end, preferably a two-syllable word, as we said above. Short and perky funny dog names resonate joy and your pooch is more likely to learn them faster. If you choose one of the longer names, like the ones listed above, you may want to come up with a shorter nickname to use regularly.
One last tip, don’t select a name that sounds like a command. “Bo” sounds like “no,” and “Nitwit” sounds like “sit,” although it may not be bad if your dog sits still when called. Other than that, have fun finding the perfect name for your dog, but always say it in the kindest, most loving voice!
Choosing a Dog’s Name: Frequently Asked Questions
Before we wrap up our guide on best dog names to call your pooch, let’s answer some of the most frequently asked questions we received from our readers regarding dog names in general!
What are the general rules for choosing a dog’s name?
- You should pick a name that you really like. Since you will be using that name for plenty of years, you should make sure you like the sound of it;
- Try the name for a few days to see how your dog responds to it;
- As we said before, avoid choosing a name that sounds like a command you are about to teach your dog. When it comes to cat names, cats do not actually learn many commands, but a dog will most likely go to training;
- If you want to teach a newborn pooch its name, offer some dog treats whenever it responds to the name, and shows signs it is learning it.
Can you rename a dog that already has a name?
Experts do not recommend you rename a dog after the age of 1 year. However, if you get a rescue dog and you don’t want its name and you want to call it something, give your new friend some time to adapt. It may be harder for older dogs to learn a new name, but they can and will if you treat them with kindness and patience.
If it is your own dog you want to rename, make sure the new name sounds like the old one. For instance, you can change Harley to Charlie or Benji to Genji, but make sure you don’t overdo it. Of course, if your dog’s name is Sir William von Fluffypants, calling it Will is probably the best choice.
What are some of the most popular dog names in the world?
We cannot speak for the rest of the world, but in the United States, some of the most common girl dog names are Bella, Lucy, and Daisy, whereas the most popular and common boy dog names are Max, Buddy, and Charlie. Of course, for a touch of originality, check out the list of cute and bold dog names we offered here.

The name that sticks in my mind is Knuckles for a Chihuahua.
That’s funny! I wonder if it’s because a Chihuahua is little and knuckles is sometimes a brutish word, conjuring images of a larger, tough as nails dog? LOL Thanks so much for sharing Cyndy!
