It’s no secret that I LOVE dogs. No matter what breed, how old, or where they come from, dogs are my passion. It comes as no surprise that dogs are many people’s favorite animals, and have become so popular and loved that they reach celebrity status. 1. Marnie
Marnie is a 17-year-old female Shih Tzu that was rescued from the streets of Connecticut and was nicknamed Stinky because of her odor. Marnie had several health issues, including partial hearing impairment and visual impairment.
Her owner found her via a pet adoption site, and Marie moved to New York. She became a social media sensation after her owner posted photos of her on Instagram. Now, Marnie has close to two million followers, and fans all over the world love her derpy attitude.
2.Boo
Boo was a Pomeranian dog that became an instant internet sensation. Dubbed the World’s Cutest Dog, Boo was the subject of several photo books. His Facebook page has over 16 million followers to this day. Unfortunately, Boo passed in early 2019 at the age of 12 due to heart issues. His social media lives on with new additions to the pack.
3. Tuna
Tuna is a Chiweenie that was abandoned by his previous owner in San Diego and adopted at a Farmer’s Market in Los Angeles. Tuna is famous for his overbite, which has made him an internet hit and subject to adorable memes. He currently has 2.1 million followers on Instagram.

6. Toast the Dog
Toast was a dog rescued from a puppy mill in North Carolina and brought to New York, where she was adopted by fashion publicist Katie Sturino and The Fat Jewish. Toast had all her decaying teeth removed due to negligence at the mill. This resulted in her tongue always sticking out of her mouth. She became internet famous with adorable photos of her derpy tongue. Unfortunately, Toast passed away in late 2017. However, her account lives on through her two fur siblings, Underpants and Muppet.
7. Doug the Pug
Doug is a pop culture icon and an internet celebrity. This pug has over 3.8 million followers on Instagram and over 6 million followers on Facebook. 30. Sunny and Bo Obama

Sunny and Bo Obama are the Obama family’s two Portuguese Water Dogs. They gained popularity when they occupied the White House. These gorgeous dogs were so popular that they had to have schedules just like the rest of the family. Everyone wanted a chance to meet with them. Bo was a gift from Senator Edward M. Kennedy, and Sunny came four years later in August of 2013.

Ivan Pavlov was a Russian physiologist known for his work in classical conditioning. Pavlov knew that his dogs would start salivating when they were fed, but then he noticed they would begin to salivate anytime they heard or saw his assistant, even when food wasn’t presented. Through his dogs, he was able to make substantial scientific and psychological discoveries.
32. Laika

Though Laika’s story is quite sad, we must share her name and honor her in our article. Laika was a Russian dog that was sent off into space and became the first animal to orbit 2,000 miles above Earth, in 1957. She, of course, died in space, and while we don’t approve of the way they sent her off into space, she is a part of canine history we hope never repeats itself.

Queen Elizabeth is well known for owning Welsh Corgis throughout her life. Her first Corgi was Susan, a birthday gift when she was 18 years old, and she has owned more than 30. The family had owned Corgis before. However, Susan was her first one to belong solely to her. Susan became the inspiration to her Pembroke Welsh Corgi Breeding Program.
34. Jofi the Chow Chow

Jofi was Sigmund Freud’s Chow Chow and was given to him as a gift when he was in his 70’s. Jofi became his constant companion and he even let her sit in on his therapy sessions. Jofi made patients, especially children, more comfortable and relaxed, which helped them open up. Freud believed dogs have a calming effect and can sense people’s emotions. Jofi is considered a firth therapy dog.
35. Balto

In 1925, Balto became the symbol of courage, hope, and tenacity when diphtheria, a deadly infection, hit Nome, Alaska. The only place to get supplies and life-saving medication was in Anchorage. With the harsh weather conditions, travel through the 650-mile stretch became almost impossible. That is until twenty mushers volunteered to make the journey, later called the “Great Race of Mercy,” each taking stretch. Although many dogs made the journey, Balto was a young Siberian Husky with little experience, so became the face of it all. Balto is honored with a statue in Central Park.
36. Smoky the Yorkshire

Smoky helped U.S. soldiers in New Guinea thread telephone wire beneath an airstrip heavily targeted by the Japanese through an 8-inch diameter pipe, that would have otherwise needed to be done by hand, leaving soldiers exposed to enemy attacks. Her owner, Corporal Bill Wynne, would call her from the other side, and Smoky would make his way through, with kite string attached to her collar holding the wires in place. Besides being a hero, Smoky had a calming effect on the soldiers, especially those recovering in hospitals, and became a therapy dog spreading love to all those who came into contact with her.
37. Bobbi the Wonder Dog

Bobbi, the Wonder Dog, was a Scottish Collie from Oregon that got lost when his family went on vacation to Indiana after three other dogs attacked him in 1923. Bobbie ran away, scared, and his family was heartbroken when their searches were unsuccessful. Six months later, Bobbie showed up at his family’s front door, dirty, skinny, and mangy. All signs point to him having made the entire 3,000 miles on his own. He rose to stardom after his ordeal, and the movie The Call of the West is about him.
38. Nemo the Vietnam War Dog

Nemo A534 was a German Shepherd who served as a soldier of the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. Nemo took a bullet for his handler, Airman Robert A. Throneburg, after an attack by the Viet Cong, but he was also wounded. Nemo lost an eye but guarded his handler’s body until help and medical attention could arrive. Airman Robert A. Throneburg received a purple heart, and Nemo was retired. Nemo received the highest of dog honors, returned to the United States, and continued working as a recruiting dog. A memorial kennel still exists today at Lackland Air Force in his honor.
39. Argos

In Homer’s Odyssey, Argos is Odysseus’ faithful dog. After 20 years struggling to get home to Ithaca, Odysseus finally arrives disguised as a beggar attempting to launch a surprise attack to suitors trying to marry his wife, Penelope. He finds Argos lying in front of his home, old and neglected, almost a different dog than the one he left behind. Argos recognizes Odysseus immediately and begins to wag his tail despite his fragile state. However, Odysseus passes Argos pretending not to know him, in fear he will be recognized and ruin his plan. Odysseus sheds a tear for his beloved dog, and immediately, Argos passes away. The tale shares a beautiful relationship between a man and his dog where not even a twenty-year span could come between their love and loyalty.
40. Lex

Lex, the German Shepherd, was the first active-duty military working dog in the U.S. Marines. On March 21, 2007, his handler, Corporal Dustin J. Lee, was wounded and killed during an attack in the Iraq War. Despite his shrapnel wounds, Lex refused to leave Lee and had to be dragged by other soldiers so he could receive medical attention. In December of 2007, Lee’s family petitioned to adopt Lex. In February 2008, Lex received the purple heart for his bravery.
41. Buddy Clinton

Buddy was the Clinton’s Chocolate Labrador Retriever and joined their family shortly after their daughter, Chelsea, left for college in 1997. Buddy was named after former President Clinton’s favorite uncle. He became best friends with the family’s cat, Sox. After the president’s second term, he moved with them into their new home in New York. Sadly, Buddy was killed after running onto the street and getting hit by a car.
42. Hachikō

Hachikō was a loyal Japanese Akita who is remembered for his loyalty. He always walked and greeted his university professor owner at the train station when he left and came home from work. Until one sad day in 1925, when Professor Hidesaburo Ueno suffered a brain hemorrhage while at the University and never returned. Hachikō returned every day, true to their daily routine. People began to notice, and his presence became iconic. Hachikō has since become a symbol of loyalty. After ten years of coming to the station every day, Hachikō passed and made national headlines. A statue of Hachikō sits at Shibuya Station and another in Hachikō’s home town of Odate.
43. Chips Army Dog

Chips was a German Shepherd Collie mix hero dog that served in World War II and received a Dickin Medal in 2018 for his bravery. In 1943, Chips and his handler, Pvt. John Rowell, were part of the invasion of Sicily. Chips ran towards machine gun fire and grabbed a German from the neck, dragging him and causing his comrades to surrender. Chips had a few burns but was otherwise fine. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, a Silver Star, and a Purple Heart. However, they were taken away due to Army policy preventing the official commendation of animals.
44. Sgt. Stubby

Sgt. Stubby served as a military mascot to the 102nd Infantry Regiment during the First World War. Background on Stubby is unknown. He was found as a stray in Connecticut and began hanging around a group of soldiers. Stubby became a stowaway on a ship to France by a young soldier, Robert Conroy, and was assigned to the 26th Yankee Division. He was wounded by grenades and injured by mustard gas. He was responsible for capturing a German spy in the Argonne and he earned the rank of Sergeant because of his achievements. When the war ended, Robert Conroy smuggled him home, and he became a celebrity.
45. Rags

Rags became a hero during World War I. He was a stray picked up by American soldiers in July 1918. Rags learned to run messages between headquarters and the front lines. He also served as an early warning system. When he would hear the sounds of a mortar attack, he would lay down on the ground and stay down. His handler, Private James Donovan, adopted him.
46. Bud Nelson

Bud Nelson was the first dog to drive across America in an automobile in 1903. He accompanied Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson and his co-driver, Sewall K. Crocker, on this road trip and completed it in 6 days. He joined the two in Idaho after they purchased him for $15. After the memorable trip and celebrity stardom, Bud settled down at the Jackson home.
47. Sallie Ann Jarrett

Sallie Ann Jarret was a famous war hero dog that stood with fellow soldiers during the Civil War. She accompanied the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry. Sallie was an American Staffordshire Terrier with a brindle coat. She would join soldiers on their drills and position herself on the front lines during battle. On July 1, 1863, during the first day at the battle of Gettysburg, Sallie became separated from the regiment and was found several days later, guarding her wounded companions. On February 6, 1865, Sallie was struck by a bullet and killed. She was honored with a life-size bronze statue with a granite pedestal in front of the Gettysburg Monument in 1890.
48. Lucca

Lucca, the German Shepherd/Malinois mix was a service dog employed by the U.S. Marine Corp. Her job was to detect explosives, and she was deployed twice, once to Iraq and once to Afghanistan. With over 400 missions under her belt, she had zero fatalities on her watch. Unfortunately, in 2012, she was injured by IED and required a leg amputation. After six years of service, Lucca retired and was adopted by her original handler, Gunnery Sergeant Chris Willingham.
49. 911 Rescue Dogs

We all remember the tragedy that struck the World Trade Center one sad day in September of 2011. While that is one of the most awful days of our time, and we now remember the loss of so many each year, we also honor the bravery and loyalty of the rescue dogs that joined the efforts to help save lives in search of survivors. Bretagne, Riley, Coby, Guinness, Apollo, Thunder, Sage, Trakr, and Jake were rays of sunshine in such a bleak situation, and worked tirelessly to help and get the job done.
50. Owney

Owney was a border terrier known as the first official post office mascot in Albany, New York. He became so popular he traveled to 48 states and around the world. Owney belonged to a clerk at the Albany post office who would often take him to work. Owney fit right in, was a faithful guarding to the Railway Mail, and liked sleeping on the bags. When his owner left his job, Owney stayed. The owner knew he was happiest at the post office. Years later, the post office honored Owney with his very own commemorative stamp in 2011.
51. Buddy the first seeing eye dog

Buddy is known as the first seeing eye dog and for his impressive instinct to lead the blind. Frank Morris, a man who lost his eyes at a young age, was inspired by an article written by Dorothy Eustis, an American living in Switzerland who ran a school that supplied dogs to the police and Red Cross. Morris wrote to Eustis and convinced her to let him train with her dogs and bring one back to share his experience. Morris brought Buddy back to the States and demonstrated his abilities in front of the media. Buddy did such a good job that Morris and Eustis co-founded the first guide dog school here in the U.S.
52. Bosco the Mayor

Bosco was a black labrador retriever rottweiler mix that was given the title of honorary mayor in the unincorporated town of Sunol, California. Bosco defeated two people running for mayor in 1981. He served until his death in 1994. Sunol may be a wacky town, but they still miss their four-pawed mayor. In 2008, Bosco was honored with a statue that sits just outside the post office.
53. Charlie Kennedy

John F. Kennedy loved dogs, and he owned several, but Charlie Kennedy, a Welsh Terrier, was by far his favorite, or so the rumors say. Charlie was a gift from his wife Jackie and was known as “Jack’s dog.” Charlie loved sticks and wanted to play fetch all the time. Kennedy enjoyed swimming with and walking Charlie.
54. Laddie Boy

Laddie Boy was an Airedale Terrier owned by President Warren G. Harding. He was a celebrity during his time in the White House. The Hardings included their dog in all of the outings. Laddie tagged along during golf games, cabinet meetings, and fundraising events. The media loved running stories about Laddie Boy. He became the poster child for the promotion of animal rights at the time. Three days before Harding passed away, Laddie howled for three days straight and after Harding’s death, he was given to Florence Harding’s favorite secret service agent. He died after living a happy life in 1929.
55. Maggie the Oldest Dog

Maggie was a Kelpie living in Australia who was believed to be 30 years old at the time of her death. Since her age could not be officially verified, the official title still belongs to a Bluey, an Australian shepherd from Rochester who died at 29 years old. Until the day she passed, Maggie was spunky, chasing cats and walking the dairy farm she lived on.
56. Cairo the Navy Seal
Cairo, the German Shepherd, is famously known to be the dog who captured Osama Bin Laden. Cairo participated in the raid Operation Neptune Spear, where the notorious leader of al-Qaeda, the organization that was responsible for the 9/11 attacks on the US, was killed. Cairo, four Navy SEALs, and a translator helped secure the perimeter around the house where Bin Laden was found, while six other Navy SEALs stormed the compound. A little over half an hour later, Bin Laden was shot and killed.

The famous ship that hit an iceberg and sank in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean had more than just human passengers aboard. Twelve dogs also made it aboard, and out of those, only three survived. The dogs included French bulldogs, Pekinese, Chow, Pomeranian, Airedale, Great Dane, Kings Charles Spaniel, and a few unknown breeds. Their owners took the dogs that survived on a lifeboat. They refused to board unless their dogs were allowed too.

Sinbad was a mix breed dog enlisted into service for the U.S. Navy by the crew of the USCGC Campbell, and his paw print was used on his enlistment papers. Sinbad was assigned damage control, below decks, and away from the gunfire. A statue of Sinbad is on the mess deck of the current “Famous-class” medium endurance cutter, a successor to the preceding Campbell.
59. Bolt

Bolt is a German Shepherd who has spent his entire life on the set of a television show and believes he has superpowers. Bolt uses his “superpowers” to save his little girl from the evil Dr. Calico. He escapes and is then stranded in the real world. Bolt was a Disney hit in 2008.
60. Clifford the Big Red Dog

Clifford the Big Red Dog is a classic children’s book first published in 1963 and written by Norman Bridell. Clifford is a two-year-old male and giant dog. However, his size in the story is always inconsistent. It has been shown to vary, from 25 feet tall to much taller. Clifford has evolved into a television show and even a live-action film.
61. Slink

In the famous Pixar series Toy Story, Slink is a toy dachshund slinky. He is a supporting character in the animated series. Slinky is friendly, playful, and one of Woody’s closest and most loyal friends, and has appeared in all four of the films.
62. 101 Dalmatians

The 101 Dalmatians animated film was first released in 1963 by Disney, based on the novel by Dodie Smith. The story is about a family with a litter of Dalmatian puppies who are kidnapped by the evil Cruella de Vil, who wants to use the dogs’ fur to make coats. The puppies’ parents, Pongo and Perdita, set out to rescue their pups only to find 84 more pups that were kidnapped or bought from pet stores, making the total 101. The story has been turned into a TV series, sequel, a live-action film remake, and a live-action spin-off.
63. Lady and The Tramp

Lady and the Tramp is the story of a female cocker spaniel that lives a cushy, upper-middle-class life with her family until they decide to have a baby. When her owners go on vacation and leave Lady and the baby in the care of an aunt, the aunt’s Siamese cats cause trouble, and Lady gets the blame. Lady runs away and meets the Tramp on her venture to the outside world. Lady and the Tramp is based on Happy Dan, The Cynical Dog by Ward Green. A 2019 live-action remake hits theaters this year.
64. Scooby-Doo

Scooby-Doo is an animated series initially released by Hanna Barbara, in 1969 featuring four teenagers and their talking Great Dane dog solving supernatural mysteries. The series was a great hit and has been turned into sequels, live-action remakes, spin-offs, and even amusement park games. A new Scooby-Doo series, Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?, premiered on June 2019.
65. Snoopy

Snoopy is a black and white beagle that is part of the comic strip Peanuts created by Charles M. Schulz. Snoopy is a loyal, innocent, and imaginative dog that likes to imagine himself as other characters such as Joe Cool, and attorney and British World War I “flying ace.” Snoopy is Charlie Brown’s dog, and Woodstock, a small yellow bird, is his best friend. To this day, Snoopy is a hit, still appearing in Sunday comic strips and animated films. Snoopy is ranked as the 8th greatest cartoon character of all time.
66. Zero

Zero is Jack’s dog and loyal companion in the stop motion Disney film, A Nightmare Before Christmas. Zero appears in a ghostly form and is entirely faithful to Jack. His primary concern is Jack’s happiness. A Nightmare Before Christmas has become a Halloween/Christmas classic, and Zero, a very popular character.
67. Balto

Balto, the animated film, is based on the real-life Balto that made the trek through Alaska to get life-saving medication to Nome. The film was released in 1995 and didn’t do great in theaters, but became a hit when released for home viewing.
68. Dug

Dug is a golden retriever that belongs to Charles F. Muntz in the Pixar animated film Up. The film follows Carl, a widower set out to see the world, a promise he made to his late wife. Dug is a silly, fun-loving dog that speaks through a voice box invented by Muntz. When Dug runs into Carl and Kevin, he quickly becomes attached to Carl. Dug has become well known for being goofy and ditzy at times.
69. Astro

Astro is the Jetsons’ talking Great Dane. Even though he can cause George Jetson stress at times, he is considered his best friend. Astro is clumsy but quite loyal. Astro’s speech pattern replaces every first letter of every word he speaks with an R sound. He has had cameos in music videos and a spin-off called Astro and the Space Mutts.
70. Blue

Blue is an animated blue dog that was born in 1996 on Nick Jr. On the educational themed show, the human host helps Blue find clues to figure something out, while viewers are invited to participate. Blue’s Clues became a smash hit and has been known to be one of the more established shows for preschoolers. The show was canceled in 2006. However, Nick Jr. has relaunched a reboot in 2019.
71. Santa’s Little Helper

Santa’s Little Helper is the Simpsons pet greyhound dog. Santa’s Little Helper is abandoned by his original owner for finishing last in a greyhound race. Homer and Bart are at the race and decide to take him home. He has become a popular character in the show and has been featured on merchandise.
72. Dante

Dante is a stray Xoloitzcuintle dog adopted by the main character Miguel in the Pixar animated film, Coco. Coco tells the story of Miguel, who is transported to the land of the dead. Dante is loyal to Miguel and accompanies him. He later becomes an alebrije, guardian to the family. Coco received rave reviews as a film that introduced children around the world to the Mexican traditions around the Day of the Dead.
73. Pluto

Pluto is an orange-colored dog with black ears. He is Mickey Mouse’s best friend and loyal companion. Pluto first appeared in Disney cartoons as a nameless bloodhound but was called Rover on his second appearance. By his third cartoon, he was named Pluto again and became Mickey’s best friend. There is no doubt that Pluto is one of the most well-known dogs around the world.
74. Odie

Odie is a yellow and brown dog that first appeared in the Garfield comic strip in 1978. Odie belongs to John just like Garfield, but is silly and slobbers with his enormous tongue. Garfield makes fun of him frequently and views him as dumb, but Odie hides his intelligence and enjoys reading Tolstoy and listening to classical music. Garfield cares about Odie, despite always pranking him or placing the blame on him for his own mischiefs.
75. All Dogs Go to Heaven

All Dogs Go To Heaven is an animated film that was released in 1989. It tells the story of Charlie B. Barkin, a German Shepherd that is murdered by his former friend, but goes back to Earth and teams up with his best friend Itchy Itchiford to help an orphaned girl named Anne-Marie. This movie is a tear-jerker, but it’s a doggie classic that will teach you the importance of kindness, love, and friendship.
76. Lassie

Lassie was a Rough Collie, a fictional character initially featured in a short story written by Eric Knight and later made into a full-length series of novels. Her story was inspired by Elizabeth Gaskell’s 1859 short story, The Half Brothers, where a collie with the same name was portrayed as an intelligent hero dog who helps rescue two brothers trapped in a snowstorm. Lassie is known worldwide and has been seen as the hero in a series of television shows and films.
77. Rin Tin Tin

Rin Tin Tin was a male German Shepherd that rose to stardom doing films after he was rescued during World War I by American Soldier Lee Duncan in France. Duncan managed to bring back Rin Tin Tin and his sister to the States. He dedicated himself to training Rin Tin Tin and securing motion picture work for the Shepherd dog. He became an instant sensation, and thanks to him, German Shepherds became a famous family dog.
78. Beethoven

A popular 90’s family film, Beethoven tells the story of a Saint Bernard named after the famous composer, Ludwig van Beethoven. A group of puppies is kidnapped, and one manages to escape and make his way to the Newton family home. The father is reluctant to keep him, but the wife and kids convince him. The film was initially received with mixed reviews but has since become a 90’s hit, mostly due to the adorable Saint Bernard that played the leading role. Since then, it has inspired sequels and spin-offs, and to this day, Beethoven is a popular name among Saint Bernards.
79. Benji

Benji is a terrier mix fictional character and the protagonist of a series of films. He’s a pooch that is always in the right place at the right time, and always ready to help. The original movie is about a stray dog that helps rescue a couple of kidnapped children. The franchise started in 1974, and in 2018, a reboot of the original was produced.
80. Einstein

Einstein was Dr. Emmet Brown’s sheepdog pet in the Back to the Future movie franchise. In the film, he became the first time traveling dog when Dr. Brown created a time machine made from a Delorean. Although left in 1985 during most of the story plot, Dr. Brown comes back (or forward) from 1885 with his family to pick him up and take him back. To this day, many scruffy dogs bare the name Einstein due to his popularity from the film.
81. Old Yeller

Old Yeller originated as a children’s novel in 1956 about a stray yellow Cur from Texas during the 1860s that comes to stay with Travis and his mother on their cattle ranch. While Travis is not fond of Old Yeller at first, the yellow pooch earns his keep and love when he saves the family on several occasions. In 1957, it was adapted for film by Disney. Old Yeller has become an iconic dog film and is known as one of the saddest movies, remembered for one of the most tearful scenes in cinematic history.
82. Petey

Petey, the pup, was a white pit bull with an almost completed black ring around his right eye. Petey was a character in Hal Roach’s Our Gang Comedies, later renamed The Little Rascals that began in 1924. Petey was played by Pal the Wonder Dog until his untimely death in 1930 after he was mysteriously poisoned. Pal’s son, Pete, who looked just like a mirror image of Pal, including the black circle around his left eye, took over the role until 1946. In 1994, a film reboot was produced, and to this day, anytime Petey is portrayed, a black circle is drawn around the dog’s eye.
83. Eddie Crane

Eddie Crane was a fictional character in the popular TV series Frasier. Famous Jack Russell Terrier actor Moose played him. He became quite famous for his excellent understanding of commands and trained skills. He could just sit and stare at Frasier, the show’s main character. Moose spent his final six years in retirement and passed of natural causes at age 15.
84. Comet

Comet was the Tanner family golden retriever dog in the television series Full House in the 1990s. On the show, Comet was the offspring of a runaway dog named Minnie. Pregnant Minnie made her way into the Tanner family home to deliver her pups, and when Minnie’s owner came to get her, he allowed the Tanners to keep one the puppies. The family named him Comet. Comet was played by Buddy, a famous golden retriever actor who had several other prominent roles, including the family film Air Bud. Buddy’s offspring now portrays the part of Comet Jr. Jr. in the Full House reboot Fuller House. Comet Jr. Jr., who then had her own litter of two puppies, Comet Jr. Jr. Jr. and Cosmo, also have roles in the new show.

Air Bud was played by the famous golden retriever actor, Buddy. In the movie, Buddy is abandoned by his alcoholic and abusive owner. He finds his way to a depressed boy named Josh Framm, who soon discovers that Buddy has the great ability to play basketball. The film was a financial success and lead to an entire franchise of Air Bud sequels and spin-off movies.
86. Sandy

Sandy was a stray scruffy dog in the movie Annie. She was orphaned Annie’s sidekick. The children from the orphanage were not allowed to have pets, so they would hide her when their caretaker, Miss Hannigan, would come around. Sandy accompanied Annie when she moved into billionaire businessman Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks’s mansion. Sandy is one of the most memorable scruffies of all time. In the new film reboot, she is played by a rescue golden retriever chow mix.
87. Max

Max is the dog and companion of Dr. Seuss’s main character, The Grinch, in the beloved Christmas tale, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Max has appeared in television and live-action film adaptations of the book. Despite The Grinch being so mean, Max is his loyal best friend. In the live-action film, Max was played by six different mixed-breed shelter rescue dogs: Kelly, Chip, Topsy, Stella, Zelda, and Bo. In our hearts, Max stole the show with his cuteness.
88. Winn-Dixie

Because of Winn-Dixie is a family movie based on the book by the same name that was released in 2005. Two Berger Picards played Winn-Dixie. The movie is about a little girl named Opal who moves to a Florida town. One day at the Winn-Dixie supermarket, she encounters a stray dog wreaking havoc. Scared they will send her to the pound, Opal claims her as her own and names her Winn-Dixie. While the movie wasn’t a huge financial success, it shined a spotlight on Berger Picards and scruffy dogs everywhere.
89. Uggie

Uggie was a Parson Russell terrier known for his role in the major motion pictures The Artist and Water for Elephants. But it was his role in the silent movie The Artist that would get him full media attention. He was described as having stolen every scene he was in. An editor at Movieline began a campaign called “Consider Uggie” on social media to help recognize Uggie’s performance in the film. The cast and crew supported the campaign to offer a special Oscar for animals in film.
90. Bruiser

Bruiser was Elle Woods’s chihuahua sidekick in the movie Legally Blonde. Doggie actor Mooniedoggie played him. Mooniedoggie went on to play Bruiser again in the Legally Blonde sequel, where he acted alongside his real-life companion Chihuahua Gidget, the Taco Bell dog.

Gidget was famous for her role in a series of Taco Bell commercials in 1997. She became the franchise mascot and was nicknamed Taco Bell Chihuahua. She became a popular icon and was the face for Taco Bell merchandise. Her phrase “Yo Quiero Taco Bell” became a pop-culture catchphrase.
92. Hooch

Hooch was a character in the 1990’s film Turner and Hooch, played by a Dogue de Bordeaux named Beasley. In the movie, Hooch is adopted by by-the-book investigator Tuner after Turner’s best friend, Hooch’s owner, is killed. The unlikely pair set off to find the murderer. Although Turner and Hooch was Beasley’s only film credit, he made such an impression that to this day, Hooch’s role in the film is remembered.
93. The Beast

The Beast is a fictional dog character in the family movie The Sandlot. Beast’s actual name in the film is Hercules, but throughout the film, the children view him as a gorilla dog legend who ate someone and is not to be messed with, so they call him The Beast. In the film, the legend states that Hercules lived to be 199 years old (in dog years).

Marley is a labrador retriever in the movie Marley and Me based on the memoir written by John Grogan, where newlyweds John and Jenny move to Florida, buy their first home, and adopt labrador retriever Marley. The memoir and film tell the story of Marley’s life with the Grogans from beginning to end. Marley and Me is also remembered as one of the saddest dog films of all time.

Milo is a Jack Russell terrier in the movie The Mask and is portrayed by actor dog Max. In the film, Milo is Jim Carrey’s character, Stanley Ipkiss’s dog. His most famous scene is where Milo tries on the mask and becomes a dog version of The Mask. This scene will forever be part of movie history, and Max’s energy level and excitement made it one of the funniest scenes.
96. Shiloh

Shiloh is a film based on a book of the same name. The story is about a beagle named Shiloh, who follows a boy home. The boy’s dad wants to return the dog, even though he is abusive. When Shiloh is abused again, he returns to the boy and is attacked by a stray. Shiloh is a classic family book and film that shares the bond between a boy and a dog. After the film’s release, Shiloh became a popular name for beagles.

Homeward Bound is a 1993 film and remake of the 1963 film The Incredible Journey, based on a book with the same name. In the story, two dogs and a cat are dropped off at a ranch while their family temporarily relocates. The three pets escape and go on a wild adventure to find their owners in San Francisco. Shadow and Chance’s story is one of loyalty and the bond dogs have with their family.
98. Toto

Toto is a fictional character in the L. Frank Baum book series, The Wizard of Oz. Toto is a Cairn Terrier that belongs to the story’s main character, Dorothy, and accompanies her on her adventures to the Land of Oz, after they are caught in a tornado. In the 1939 film, Toto was played by a female brindle Cairn Terrier named Terry. Her name was later officially changed to Toto. Toto’s role is one of the most famous dog roles and was even the inspiration for an American rock band’s name. A permanent memorial for Toto was dedicated at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles.
99. Cujo

Cujo is the story of a sweet Saint Bernard that gets bitten by a bat and turns into an aggressive and rabid dog who then traps a mother and her child inside a car without food or water during a heatwave. The film is based on the Stephen King 1981 novel with the same name. While not one of my favorite portrayals of our canine friends, to this day, Cujo is a popular name for feisty dogs.
100. Otis

Otis was a pug in the 1989 movie The Adventures of Milo and Otis. The film is based on a Japanese film that was released in 1986, about a dog and cat that accidentally stray away from their home in Japan. When Milo, the cat, is playing inside a box, he unintentionally drifts downstream on the river. Otis, the pug, runs after him. Milo goes on many adventures, avoiding one incident after another with Otis following less than a mile behind. At the time, it was the third highest-grossing film in Japan.
